The Hawaii Fire Department reports multiple runaway brush fires in the area of mile markers 14 through 23 of Mamalahoa Highway, also known as Highway 190. This is south or Kona side of the Saddle Road and Highway 190 junction. The fires are burning on the mauka or east side of the highway and are not threatening any homes or property at this time.

Emergency crews are on scene and because of heavy smoke and fire conditions the highway is closed to all traffic at this time. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and to use alternate routes if possible. Traffic is being detoured through Waikoloa Road and Kaiminani Drive in Kona.

Anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious or unusual activity in that area earlier this afternoon is asked to report their observations to the Hawaii County Police Department at 935-3311.
